Robusta beans are denser than Arabica and require slightly higher roasting temperatures and longer development times. SC18 screen size means consistent bean density, which translates to even roasting with fewer hot spots. First crack occurs at a higher temperature than Arabica. Do not rush the development phase.

Uganda is one of Robusta coffee's ancestral homes. Coffea canephora, the species that Robusta belongs to, grew wild along the northern shores of Lake Victoria for centuries before commercial cultivation began. Smallholder farmers in the Lake Victoria basin have cultivated Robusta as a primary cash crop for generations, and the region's elevation of 1,200 to 1,500 metres above sea level is high for Robusta, producing a cleaner, more complex cup than lowland-grown Robusta from other origins.

This lot is sourced from the Nganda and Erecta varietals, the two primary Robusta cultivars native to Uganda, within a 300 km radius of Lake Victoria. Natural processing — sun-drying the whole cherry before milling — concentrates the bean's inherent sweetness and contributes to the grape and spice character in the cup. The SC18 screen size grade ensures large, dense, uniform beans that roast consistently across both small home roasting batches and larger commercial production runs.

Robusta today represents roughly 40% of global coffee production, and its role in modern roasting is being reassessed.
